1953 Buick Roadmaster
1953 proved to be one of Buicks best, as changes were in store for the 1953 Buick Roadmaster. The compact dimensions of the V-8 engine enabled Buick to fit the 1953 Roadmaster to the shorter wheelbase of the Super, though styling differences were relatively minor. The big news came with the introduction of a limited-production Roadmaster convertible "the Skylark".
The Buick Skylark first appeared as a limited production model in 1953 and 1954, when it disappeared, only later to reappear in 1961. The first Buick Skylark commemorated Buick's 50th anniversary. Offered as a limited edition convertible with only 1,690 units produced off of the Roadmaster line, making it one of the most collectible Buicks still to this day. The '53 Skylark was full of first class and performance. The body was designed by Harley Earl and offered a look of no other. While there were no ventiports (known as "port holes") the windshield was laid over, and the wheelwells were opened up considerably. A body-length strip swept from the front fender down to the front base of the rear wheelwell, then outlined the front of the wheelwell before ending at the taillights. Distinctive Skylark badges were located just ahead of the rear wheelwells and the leather interior was exquisite with ribbed inserts and the Skylark came with many numerous other luxury features. Borrani chrome forty-spoke wheels completed the look. The Skylark also was the first Buick to showcase its new engine, a 322 cid V8 rated at 188 hp. While this fully loaded Skylark was not light, and weighed in at just over 4300 lbs the new 322 V8 was still fairly peppy for it's day and could maintain a top speed of 105 mph.
